VARINDIA, India's frontline IT publication, organized the eleventh edition of VARINDIA - Star Nite Awards - 2012" on 9th November, 2012 in the Capital. This event in India is considered to be the litmus test for IT corporates for their marketing policies, strategies and initiatives that involve vendors, distributors and resellers. Eminent personalities and top performers of the IT industry in various categories participated in the event and the IT companies showcased their products.
VARINDIA, which hosted the felicitation ceremony, commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the guests of honour and other high-profile dignitaries.
Shri. J. Satyanarayana, IAS, Secretary, DeitY, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India, congratulated VARINDIA for organizing such a significant event and addressed a lot of issues pertaining to the technology-led industry at large. He informed about some of the projects which the Government of India has undertaken. He said, "We have undertaken the e-literacy campaign wherein at least one member of a family will be e-literate."
Shri. Gulshan Rai, Director General, I-CERT, Government of India, spoke at length on the importance of Cyber Security as today it is of prime concern for everyone in the country.
Addressing the august audience, Shri. R. S. Sharma, IAS, Director General & Mission Director, UIDAI, Government of India, revealed the entire process of how the massive UIDAI project is being implemented and the challenges faced due to the vast population of the country. Underlining the success of the project, he said, "Today, this is being used by people for various reasons such as drawing wages, pension or buying ration."
Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher, VARINDIA, spoke about the advantages of India's large geographical presence. "This has led the world eyeing the scope and opportunity in our country and at the same time the industry has grown to the new era of opportunities in the areas of Cloud and Data storage. And now it is Big Data which in the latter stage will migrate to Smarter Analytics and the VARs will have to play a major role in bringing success to any project. Needless to say, channel will not only survive but also thrive and continue to be the catalyst for growth," he added.
Shri. Harsh Chitale, CEO, HCL Infosystems Ltd., threw light on the importance of SMBs and how the corporates can work with Channel partners to tap better opportunities.
S. Mohini Ratna, Editor, VARINDIA, in her inaugural address to the audience, said, "VARINDIA magazine fully subscribes to the principle of empowerment through technology. Today, empowerment is a significant term that dominates the life of a nation. Thus, IT is one of the most important tools to reach this goal and technology is, indeed, the key word." She further added, "This year, awards are based on the feedback from customers, channel partners and the study made by the VARINDIA team in various markets, including metros and B & C class cities in terms of product penetration, level of engagements with partners, handling logistics, service support, quick response and product performance. The evaluation barometer includes the industry/market feedback and the voting mechanism in our website. 15,450 respondents have voted for their favourite companies. This shows that partners are really taking interest towards choosing their favourite vendor."
Shri. Ajay Sehgal, Country Manager, Channel Sales Organization, HP India Sales Pvt. Ltd, spoke on the importance of Channel partners for HP and the readiness of the company to take upon new opportunities.
The event comprised of presentations by IT corporates and equally engrossing Panel Discussion on "Best Practices in growing IT Business". The Panel discussion was moderated by the industry veteran Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Sr. Vice-President, Canon India., who was pivotal in shaping the panel discussion into a great source of knowledge and amusement. The thundering sound of applause from the audience marked testimony to this fact.
This year, VARINDIA also recognized the Technology Evangelist since it believes that people are the most important part of the transformation process and key to growth and success of any organization. Each organization has its own expertise to address the market. The role of a Technology Evangelist is critical in driving early adoption of emerging technologies. Awards were given across 42 categories. Besides there was also the Editor's Choice Award and Award for Best Reseller - Delhi.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for networking and also a platform to the doyens of the IT industry to present their views about the latest technologies and achievements. As always, VARINDIA Star Nite Awards' earnest efforts were and are to continue recognizing the real Tech heroes who shape a bright today and a brighter tomorrow.

The awards ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks and was followed by a grand dinner.
Shri. Harsh Chitale
CEO HCL Infosystems
"Today as a country or as an industry we may be going through a little bit of a trough in some of the segments, but we should not forget what kind of opportunity in this sector is still ahead of us. Since this event is more about how companies like us can grow together with channel partners and system integrators, I would touch on the fact that I see lot of scope for this partnership to grow and prosper. The first wave of information technology implementation that happened in our country happened with big corporate- big banks, big government projects. But now the second wave which is emerging is with the SMBs."
Shri. J.Satyanarayana
IAS, Secretary IT GOI
"Today the situation has come where the definition or explanation of VAR should be changed. In India the need is not merely value addition but also value creation in the technology led sectors, be it IT or Telecom. In the last 6-8 months the government has approved three policies which are quite significant in this regard and if you see the common threads in these policies, it is to reach out to the citizens of the country in different ways. One of the objective of the policy is to provide broadband to all by 2020. This may sound very simple but it is infact quiet difficult to implement even in a span of eight years given the terrain of the Indian geographies and the affordability factor".
Shri. R.S.Sharma
IAS D.G.&Mission Director UIDAI
"The manifestation of the huge UIDAI project has gone through a trail and error method. We settled for a minimalistic data collection approach which can prove identity. other applications and databases were built which are connected to the Aadhar or the UIDAI number but the main body will just collect minimal data. Eventually this proved to be a great design choice as that is how we have been able to scale up and been able to respond to the privacy issues people raised. Second approach was that the things were standard based as then it becomes interoperable and enables communication to other systems. And we settled for using open source stack wherever it is possible and wherever it is not possible we will go to proprietary".
Shri. Gulshan Rai
D.G. CERT GOI
"I have been seeing this industry for the last 25 years. Today our IT industry has reached $ 110 billion. So much expansion has taken place, different kind of innovations, technologies and applications have come up. Today there are some applications which we really did not imagine a decade ago. There are a couple of factors which are making an impact in the society both in terms of technology innovations and social applications. Mobility, social media and cyber security are converging and cannot be separated. Security is going to emerge in an altogether different way not only in terms of technology but also in terms of jurisprudence. Security is going to offer us many opportunities. Today the main challenge before us is how to secure the momentum of the technology".
Shri. Ajay Sehgal
Country Manager HP (PPS)
"Change is happening all around us and change is equal to opportunity. At HP we are all ready to grab all the opportunities that is around us. Just to reiterate the fact that we are a trusted brand and we are committed to our customers as well as our channel partners- we ship 4servers, 120 PCs and 100 printers every minute. HP has a huge channel partner base. Worldwide we have around 185 thousand commercial channel partners, 160 thousand retail partners and in India we have got more than 5000 partners both commercial and retail put together. On the infrastructure side we have a great portfolio be it servers, storage, networking, PCs printer, multifunctional devices".

A Technology Evangelist is a person who attempts to build a critical mass of support for an emergent technology in order to establish it as a technical standard in a market. The true evangelist is always aggressive. Through innovation and iteration, they aim to take things that work well and improve upon them in unexpected ways. Evangelists are expected to play a major role in formulating the domestic needs and conditions at affordable price points.
An evangelist promotes the use of a particular product or technology through talks, articles, blogging, user demonstrations, recorded demonstrations, or the creation of sample projects.
The typical technology evangelist exhibits a strong sense of urgency, initiative, and competitive drive, accomplishing tasks at a fast pace both with and through individuals. While there is indeed urgency tied to goal achievement, technology evangelists’ share an equal responsibility for the achievement of goals before the technology lifecycle gravitates into majority adoption.
The Technology Evangelist is one who is passionate, self-confident self-starter skillful at training and developing other individuals. Technology Evangelists’ possess excellent communication skills and are masters at influencing the eco-system of IT as being equally adept at encouraging customers to try out the technology.
India is a recognized global player in software and software services sector and one of the fastest growing markets of electronics in the world. The demand of Electronics Industry is expected to reach USD 400 Billion by 2020. Technology Evangelists have a major role to play in developing custom standards to meet specific Indian conditions by suitably reviewing existing standards and to create an eco-system for manufacturing in the country moving towards digitalization.
Our editorial board has worked hard to zero upon the Evangelists starting from the categories of Printers to electronics security and converged infrastructure. We are here recognizing the real heroes in the Industry, who have done the hard work for the industry as an evangelist.

One of the special attractions of the event was the panel discussion and the topic was "Best Practices in Growing the IT Business". The Panel Discussion was moderated by Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Sr. V.P- Canon India. Opening the floor for the Panel Discussion Alok said, "There is no doubt that when we look at what is impacting our lives and the world at large, technology is one of the most important point that comes on our radar.
The Panel consisted of three groups. Group A consisted of the IT Corporates, Group B consisted of the System Integrators and Distributors, and Group C consisted of the IT Associations.
Ranjan Chopra, MD, Team Computers, said, "From a system integration point of view what really matters is the experience. A powerful customer experience can be achieved by synthesizing the best component from various vendors. Further, Devendra Taneja ,MD, PC Solutions opined, "There should be more trust and openness when we start something new. We are still very archaic in our system of adoption or payment process."
K.V Jagannath, Managing Director, Choice Solutions said that, Trust, Innovation and collaboration are the drivers for growth. Taking the panel discussion ahead, Vipin Tyagi, Director- C Dot explained that there are some key learnings for India, the first is that there should be adjustment to the Indian pricing, then there should be simplification so that it can be related to the people and for this we need to innovate in India. Thirdly, technology should not be confined to the elites but should flow to the masses.
Moderated by: Dr. Alok Bharadwaj
Senior Vice President
Canon India
Manish Pant, MD, Luminous Power Technologies said, "India is a large country and the main challenge is how we make energy affordable to the masses."
Khwaja Saifuddin, Director Sales - Western Digital said that the key thing that we need to think today is that why still in India technology penetration is in single digit.
Pradeep Khemani, Country head, Channels & SMB, HP ESSN, was of the view that, SMB business is one segment which really wants to adopt IT, but probably is not educated or aware in terms of understanding how IT can help the business.
Tushar Sighat, CEO- D-link India said that applications makes technology interesting and attract people towards it." He further said that the time has come to get the hardware and the software sector wedded.
Sanjiv Krishan, MD, IRIS Computers opined that from a distribution point of view, a lot of money and resources are required in order to make technology proliferate in the country and funding becomes a pain point. This needs to be addressed.
Kshitij M Kotak, President - ASIRT said, "If we have to build good ecosystem for IT one of the good practices is to protect and encourage the small and medium enterprises."
Pradeep Biyani, President-COMPASS said, "The times have changed today and so also the problems. There should be collaboration among the ecosystem, it should not be the case of extraction from one to create wealth for another".
